Speaker Kadaga tasks Govt to produce Covid-19 sh450b Beneficiaries
The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has challenged Government to make public a list of all companies and organizations that benefited from the sh450b stimulus package meant to cushion the economy against the effects of Covid-19.
Her appeal intends to subject the list to further scrutiny following allegations that all the beneficiaries were Kampala-based organizations for a programme intended for the entire country.
In the financial year running, Parliament approved the allocation of sh450b to the Uganda Development Bank (UDB) to bail out companies and individuals in major sectors of the economy such as agriculture, tourism, health, and education that had been severely hit by Covid-19.
It, however, emerged that the money had been doled out to a list of carefully selected companies belonging to top-notch traders and businessmen in Kampala, while UDB made qualifications for other Ugandans to access the credit stringent.
Parliament’s finance committee is currently investigating how UDB and the finance ministry handled the management of the sh450b fund allocated as a stimulus package for the national economy during Covid-19.
