Parliament passes Tobacco Control (Amendment) Bill, 2021
Parliament has passed the Tobacco Control (Amendment) Bill 2021 which seeks to impose an export tax on leaf tobacco.
The Bill is expected to see the government generate at least Sh20b annually.
It also seeks to control the demand for the consumption of tobacco and its products, its supply and products to the population.
Protect the environment from the effects of tobacco production and consumption and exposure to tobacco smoke.
Promote the health of persons and reduce tobacco related illness and deaths; protect persons from the socio economic effects of tobacco production and consumption.
It further seeks to; promote research, surveillance and exchange of information on tobacco control; insulate tobacco control policies, laws and programs from interference by the tobacco industry; and strengthen coordination, partnerships and collaboration for tobacco control.
The Bill also seeks to; establish the Tobacco Control Committee; fulfil Uganda’s obligation and commitment as a party to the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) and to provide for other related matters.
