High Court Set to Hear Nicholas Opiyo’s Case Today

The High Court’s Anti-Corruption Division will today start hearing a bail application for detained Chapter Four Executive Director, lawyer Nicholas Opiyo.

A production warrant, dated December 28, issued by the court to the officer in charge of Kitalya prison, where Opiyo was remanded, directed  him to produce Opiyo in Court Room No.1 at the High Court in Kampala before Lady Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga at 9:00am.

Opiyo was arrested on December 22 in Kamwokya and later charged before the Nakawa court with two charges – money laundering and neglect to submit annual returns to the National Bureau for Non-Governmental Organisations as required under the law.

The magistrate remanded Opiyo, noting that he had no jurisdiction over the matter and the file was transferred to the Anti-Corruption Division.

On Monday, Opiyo appeared before the Anti-Corruption court’s Grade One Magistrate Moses Nabende via Video conferencing and was charged afresh.

The state alleges that Opiyo, on October 8, 2020 at ABSA bank in Kampala, received $340,000 (sh1.2b) through ABSA account number 60040780445, which are in the names of Chapter Four Uganda, knowing at the time the funds were proceeds of crime.
