The National Bureau of Non-Government Organizations (NGO-Bureau) has suspended operations of National Election Watch Uganda (new-u), which a loose coalition that was established by 60 organizations including the Uganda joint Christian council that includes the catholic church, church of Uganda and orthodox church.
The senior communications officer of the NGO Bureau, Patrick Onen ezaga, told Nettech Media that the operations of the coalition were illegal.
He added that “whereas it’s not bad to form the coalition, its operations must be regulated and overseen by the government.”.
Enanza explained to Nettech reporters that while making inquiries, the Bureau found out that NEW-U had its Secretariant at the Uganda National NGO-forum which was not registered with NGO-Bureau as required by the law.
Ezanga said that only 42 of 65 organizations in the coalition were duly registered with the NGO-Bureau and 11 organizations were not registered.
“We want all these coalitions to be legalized either by the NGO-Bureau or Uganda Registration Services Bureau.” He noted.
Ezanga said as a result the Bureau decided to halt NEW-U operations with immediate effect, and that there would be no further activities and statement
