Government drops OTT tax adopts new tax on data

The government has dropped the Over the Top Services (OTT) tax that was required in order to use social media and has adapted a new tax on data.

On Thursday, Parliament passed the excise duty (Amendment) Bill 2021 that repealed the article in the bill that required Ugandans to pay shs200 daily as OTT tax.

According to the Excise Duty (Amendment) Bill 2021, a 12% tax will be levied on all internet data, save for that meant for research, educational and medical purposes.
