Elias Lukwago Petitions EC Over Campaigns in Kampala
Kampala’s Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has filed a case in high court in his capacity as the political head of Kampala seeking an order quashing the Electoral commission’s decision to suspend election campaign meetings in 12 districts.
Lukwago based on the ground that the decision was irrational, illegal and constitutes an egregious affront to his right to associate and interface with the electorate and the entire citizenry which is a cornerstone of a free and fair election.
Mr. Lukwago also seeks a declaration that EC’s decision amounts to a deprivation and violation of candidates’ rights to disseminate ideas, political platforms or agenda to the electorate which is a vital tenet of electoral democracy.
The Electoral Commission on Saturday suspended campaign meetings in Kampala and 11 other districts in the country owing to the surging Coronavirus infections and the continued violation of Standard Operating Procedures.
