Elections Commission Petitioned Over Nominations Of 145 Candidates.

The Uganda Electoral Commission has been petitioned by over 145 Candidates, challenging the nominations of Candidates for the 2021 elections.

The acting EC spokesperson told Nettech Media that petitions are from all political parties and independents including Special Interest Group (SIGs), Parliamentary and Local Government nominations.

The EC tribunal, headed by Justice Simon Byabakama, yesterday held a meeting to handle petitions.

Bukenya said that petitioners claim that some nominated candidates still had unsettled issues from their primary party elections.

Other reasons cited by petitioners include allegations that some nominated candidates lack academic qualifications, name discrepancies, or lied about their age.

Bukenya added that some other petitioners accuse their returning officers of blocking their nominations, which he argued all officers follow the guidelines of Electoral Commission.

“Other petitioners claim some of the people we nominated had already been nominated for instance for local Government elections and were again nominated for the Parliamentary polls.” Bukenya noted.

Sources say most of the petitions are from the ruling party National Resistance Movement, filed by aggrieved members of the NRM who have opted to challenge nomination of flag bearers.
