EC Warns Presidential Candidates Against Rallies and Processions
The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Simon Byamukama has warned presidential candidates against holding processions and rallies saying it’s against the campaign guidelines set by EC.
In a statement issued yesterday, Byabakama said that EC had noticed that some of the Presidential candidates continue to hold gathering of large numbers, holding processions along public roads, towns and trading centres and some in non-designated venues as per the harmonized campaign program, despite the ban on mass gatherings by the government.
He asserted that this is violation of the commission’s guidelines that the campaigns should be conducted in observance of Standard Operating Procedures and in designated places.
Byabakama noted that the conduct is unacceptable and must be looked into considering that as on 10th Nov 2020, the cumulative COVID-19 infection cases in Uganda stood at 14, 704 with 133 deaths so far registered in the country.
